Grant & Loan Support
Scotland's grant and loan support, explained
Scotland's home energy support is different from England's Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Here's what's actually available north of the border — and how to know if you're eligible.
Scottish Government-backed grants and loans may be available for heat pumps, subject to eligibility. A clean-heating grant of up to £7,500 (£9,000 rural or island uplift) may apply, with optional loan support. Combined loans across measures can reach £25,000 — the amount depends on the measures installed and your eligibility. There is no grant for replacement gas boilers. The homeowner applies personally; landlords are excluded.

The key difference
Scotland vs England — what's different
England: Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
- £7,500 grant for heat pumps (England & Wales only)
- £5,000 grant for biomass boilers (rural only)
- Does NOT cover gas boiler replacement
- Administered by Ofgem
Scotland: Grant & Loan Support
- Grant up to £7,500 for clean heating (£9,000 rural/island uplift)
- Optional loan up to £7,500
- Combined loans across measures up to £25,000 (eligibility-dependent)
- Does NOT cover replacement gas boilers
- Administered by the Scottish Government
Clean heating grant
Up to £7,500 for heat pumps
Scottish Government-backed clean-heating grants may provide up to £7,500 toward an air source or ground source heat pump, subject to eligibility. For rural or island properties, this may increase to £9,000. This is a grant — it doesn't need to be repaid.
The homeowner applies personally; landlords are excluded. The grant is paid after installation, once the work is verified.
Loan support
Optional loan up to £7,500
On top of the grant, you may be able to apply for an optional loan of up to £7,500 to cover the remaining cost, subject to status. Combined loans across multiple energy improvement measures can reach £25,000 — the amount depends on the measures installed and your eligibility.
This is separate from the grant and does need to be repaid. Loans available, subject to status.
What's NOT covered
No grant for gas boiler replacement
Neither Scottish Government-backed grant support nor the English Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers replacement gas boilers. If your gas boiler needs replacing, the cost is self-funded — though loans may be available, subject to status.
